The Trip-Finder, January 1998 Australia Studying Koalas on Kangaroo Island The Route: Track and observe koalas as they chew their way through the “Galapagos of Australia,” a wildlife haven ten miles south of Adelaide in the Southern Ocean. You’ll work for 11 days alongside an Aussie naturalist. When to go: Year-round Difficulty: Moderate Travel advisory: Low ozone levels in the upper atmosphere make ultraviolet radiation in this part of the world particularly intense. A full-brimmed hat and sunblock with an SPF of 40 or higher are advisable. High/low points: Glimpsing the Sydney Olympics mascot — the toothless, nocturnal echidna, one of only two egg-laying mammals in the world. Realizing the data you collect may ultimately lead to koala culling. Copyright 1998, Outside magazine |
