The Trip-Finder, January 1998 Namibia Crossing the Desert on Horseback The Route: Thirteen days and 217 miles of cantering among zebras, springboks, and ostriches, through starkly beautiful Naukluft Park and on to the sea. When to go: February to October Difficulty: Strenuous Travel advisory: This trip pushes both horse and rider to the limit. Each day you’ll cover 20 to 25 miles, spending up to eight hours in the saddle. Advanced riders only. High/low points: Galloping down the last steep sand dune into the Atlantic surf. Paying a 30-percent higher trip fee if you weigh more than 185 pounds — because you’ll need a replacement horse midway through the trip. Copyright 1998, Outside magazine |
