Takakaw, the biggest waterfall in B.C. Q: How does one get to Takakaw, the largest waterfall in B.C.? Greg Vancouver, B.C., Canada carr@direct.ca. A: Takakaw Falls is located in Yoho National Park, in eastern British Columbia–just over the border with Alberta. At 833 feet high, it’s one of the biggest waterfalls in Canada and well worth the detour off Highway 1. Getting there means heading north from Highway 1 on Yoho Valley Road. After eight miles of rough going (leave the new Porsche at home), you’ll arrive at Takakaw’s parking area and your first view of the falls. From there, it’s an easy ten-minute walk in, past interpretive nature displays and across the Yoho River to the bottom of the falls. You’re so close, it’s impossible to avoid getting soaked by the spray. If you want to stay the night, pitch your tent in the Takakaw Falls Campground, just beyond the far end of the parking area. The 35 walk-in sites ($5-$6 per night; June-September) are spread out about ten minutes in along the Yoho Valley Trail. For more information, contact Yoho’s park headquarters at 604-343-6324. |
