Vermont ski resort Jay Peak will pay $80,000 to settle claims that it violated the federal Clean Water Act when it filled two acres of wetlands with debris from the construction of a golf course. In light of Vermont’s recent flooding, New England EPA official Curt Spalding emphasized the importance of enforcing wetlands protections. “Wetlands … act like sponges and can reduce the effects that heavy rain storms have on the surrounding communities,” he said.
